The Bangladesh transformer market has witnessed steady growth over the past decade, fueled primarily by the government’s ambitious rural electrification programs and rapid urbanization. As the country extends grid connectivity to previously underserved areas, demand for distribution transformers (up to 33 kV) has surged, with imports accounting for nearly 70 % of supply. Major global and regional players—particularly from China, India, and South Korea—have established strong footholds, offering cost-competitive oil-filled and dry-type units tailored to local specifications.

Looking ahead, Bangladesh’s Vision 2041 master plan—which targets universal access to electricity and significant renewable energy penetration—promises further investment in substation and transmission infrastructure. This will drive demand not only for conventional transformers but also for specialized units (e.g., phase-shifting and on-load tap changers) to manage intermittency from wind and solar farms. However, challenges remain in improving grid reliability and fostering domestic manufacturing; current policy incentives are gradually encouraging joint ventures and technology transfer to build local production capacity.
