What Are New York Oversize Permits?
New York Oversize Permits are required if your truck or load is oversize or overweight than the state’s legal limits. These limits include:
Width: 8 feet 6 inches (8 feet in NYC)
Height: 13 feet 6 inches
Length: 53 feet (or 55 feet max in NYC)
Weight: 80,000 pounds gross
If your load goes beyond any of these, you’ll need a special permit.

How Long Are Permits Good For?
New York State permits are valid for 5 travel days.
NYC permits are good for one travel period, either during the day or night.
New York Thruway permits are usually valid for 1 to 3 days.
When Can You Travel?
Travel is allowed Monday through Friday, starting 30 minutes before sunrise until 30 minutes after sunset.
Saturday travel is allowed until Noon but only if your load is not too wide or long.
Overweight-only loads (up to 96,000 pounds) can travel 24/7.
No travel is allowed on holidays or during peak rush hours in cities.
NYC and Thruway Travel
Traveling in New York City is tricky. Loads over 10 feet wide often require night travel only, and special escorts may be needed. You’ll also need a separate NYC permit. The same goes for the New York Thruway—you’ll need a separate permit for that too.
