Clear Aligners: An Effective Alternative to Traditional Braces

They are nearly invisible, removable dental aligners that straighten teeth without wires or brackets. They are made from a thin, clear plastic material that fits closely over teeth. Each aligner is worn for approximately two weeks before moving to the next aligner in a series. They work by gently repositioning teeth in a series of tiny movements over the course of treatment.

How do They Work?
Clear aligner treatment begins with impressions of teeth or digital scans that are used to create a detailed digital model of the teeth. A licensed orthodontist analyzes this model to determine the most effective treatment plan. A series of clear, customized aligners is then produced that will gradually shift teeth into the desired position.

Patients change aligners every 1-2 weeks as teeth shift. This allows teeth to move gradually into place without experiencing pain from sudden movements. As each aligner wears out, patients move to the next one. Compliance is important, as aligners must be worn for at least 22 hours per day. Over the course of treatment, typically lasting 6-12 months, teeth move week by week into the desired position.

Benefits
They offer several advantages over traditional braces:

Nearly Invisible - They are nearly impossible to detect when worn. This allows patients to enjoy treatment without feeling self-conscious about braces. They easily come off for eating, drinking, brushing and flossing.

Comfortable and Convenient - Unlike metal brackets and wires, they do not rub or irritate soft tissues inside the mouth. They are smooth and easy to wear all day long. Patients can also easily remove aligners for eating, sporting activities, photos or special occasions.

Shorter Treatment Time - New digital technologies and treatment planning software allow orthodontists to shift teeth in smaller increments for faster treatment results. Many patients see results in as little as 6 months with them.

Better Oral Hygiene - Clear aligners are removable, making proper brushing and flossing much easier compared to fixed braces. This helps reduce plaque buildup and the risk of cavities during treatment.

Effective for Various Cases - While they do work best for less complex cases, technology advances have expanded their capabilities to treat more complex issues such as deep bites, underbites, crossbites and gaps. As long as teeth can be moved gradually, aligners are a great option.

Drawbacks
There are some potential drawbacks orthodontists warn patients about:

Patient Compliance - Aligners must be worn for 22 hours per day (exceptions are for eating, brushing and flossing) to be effective. Patients must be very compliant or treatment may take longer. Misplacing or not wearing aligners can compromise results.

Attachments or Replacements - In some cases, attachments may need to be bonded to teeth for better grip as teeth move. While less common today, some patients require mid-course adjustments or refinements with new aligners to achieve the best possible outcome.

Teeth Sensitivity - Just as with braces, as teeth are shifted some tenderness, pressure or pain may occur that requires over-the-counter pain medication for relief. Effects are usually temporary.

Not for Every Case - While aligner technology has advanced greatly, some cases still require traditional braces for better control or force levels during tooth movement. An orthodontist exam determines the best solution.

Cost - Clear aligner treatment is an investment that on average ranges between $3,000-$8,000 depending on complexity of the case and provider. Some dental plans do cover all or part of aligner therapy.

Is Its Treatment Right for Me?
They can benefit many patients, but deciding if they are right involves considering factors like:

- Orthodontic Issues - Clear aligners work best for minor tooth alignment problems like crowding, small spacing or shifting teeth. More extensive treatments usually still require braces.

- Oral Health - Patients must have good oral hygiene habits and no significant existing gum disease or cavities that require treatment first.

- Commitment to Treatment - Aligners involve wearing aligners nearly constantly for weeks/months. Only motivated, compliant patients will complete treatment successfully.

- Bite or Jaw Issues - Conditions affecting how teeth come together like TMJ dysfunction or jaw asymmetry may still require fixed braces.

- Aesthetics - Patients seeking truly invisible treatment will find aligners more appealing than braces. At the same time, motivation to wear aligners must overcome some visibility.

- Cost and Insurance - Most orthodontic treatment options come at significant out-of-pocket costs, so affordability and coverage limitations factor in as well.

With careful screening by an orthodontist, clear aligners represent a great solution for many patients seeking dental alignment without metal brackets. But as with any orthodontic treatment, proper case selection and execution are key to achieving the best possible results.
