The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made a big decision that will affect thousands of young cricketers across the country. The board has changed how it checks the age of players who take part in Under-16 and Under-15 tournaments.
At CricHourly, we are committed to covering every important update in the world of cricket — from player journeys to policy changes like this one that can shape the future of the game.
Why the Age Test Was a Problem
Until now, BCCI used a one-time bone age test using the TW3 method. After this test, they would automatically add one year to the player's bone age to decide if the player could play again in the next season. But this method didn’t look at how much a player’s body really changed. It just guessed.
For example, if a boy had a bone age of 15.5 years, BCCI would consider him 16.5 the next year. Since the age cut-off for Under-16 is 16.4 years, that boy would not be allowed to play — even if his body had not actually developed that much. Many players lost their chance because of this unfair rule.
What Has Changed?
Now, BCCI will allow a second bone test in the following season. This test will help check the player’s real physical growth. If the player’s new bone age still fits within the limit, they can play. This change is expected to help many young athletes who would have been left out before.
At CricHourly, we welcome this decision because we believe every player should get a fair chance to show their talent. We always support policies that make cricket more fair and accessible.
Age Limits You Should Know
-
For Under-16 Boys, the maximum allowed age is 16.4 years
-
For Under-15 Girls, the limit is 14.9 years
Earlier, even players who were just within the age limit lost their chance because of the automatic age increase rule. The second test now gives them hope and a new chance to continue their journey in cricket.

What Experts Are Saying
A BCCI official said this change was needed because the old system was too rigid. "Now we are giving importance to real growth, not just numbers on paper,” the official explained. This new rule should lead to fewer players being wrongly disqualified.

Final Thoughts
This new age testing rule is a big step forward for Indian cricket. It shows that the BCCI is listening to concerns and is ready to support young talent in a more scientific and fair way.
