These tests are very effective at helping women pinpoint their fertile window. But this leads to an important point of confusion: Can ovulation tests detect pregnancy, or is this a misinterpretation of hormone behavior?
The hormone detected in pregnancy is human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). While LH and hCG are chemically similar, they serve different purposes. Some sensitive ovulation tests may occasionally cross-react and show a false positive due to early hCG presence, especially if hormone levels are unusually high.
However, that doesn’t mean it’s accurate. Can ovulation tests detect pregnancy with any reliability? No. They are not built to measure hCG and should not be used to confirm pregnancy.
