2. Kurma (The Tortoise)
In the Kurma avatar, Vishnu transformed into a tortoise to support Mount Mandara, which was used as a churning rod during the churning of the ocean of milk (Samudra Manthan). This event led to the emergence of divine treasures and the elixir of immortality, Amrita.
3. Varaha (The Boar)
Vishnu's third incarnation, Varaha, took the form of a boar to rescue the Earth, personified as the goddess Bhudevi, from the demon Hiranyaksha. The demon had submerged the Earth in the cosmic ocean, and Varaha lifted it on his tusks, restoring it to its rightful place.
4. Narasimha (The Man-Lion)
Narasimha, the fourth avatar, is a fierce half-man, half-lion form. Vishnu manifested as Narasimha to protect his devotee Prahlada and to defeat the demon king Hiranyakashipu, who was immune to attacks from man, beast, or god. Narasimha killed Hiranyakashipu at twilight, circumventing the demon's boon.
5. Vamana (The Dwarf)
In the Vamana avatar, Vishnu appeared as a dwarf Brahmin to humble the demon king Bali, who had gained control over the three worlds. Vamana asked for three paces of land and then expanded to cover the entire universe in his strides, sending Bali to the netherworld and restoring cosmic balance.
6. Parashurama (The Warrior with an Axe)
Parashurama, the sixth avatar, is a Brahmin warrior with an axe. He appeared during a time when the Kshatriya class was abusing its power. Parashurama is known for his campaign against these warriors, restoring dharma (righteousness) and order.
7. Rama (The Prince of Ayodhya)
Rama, the seventh avatar, is one of the most revered deities in Hinduism. As the prince of Ayodhya, he is the protagonist of the epic Ramayana. Rama's life exemplifies dharma, honor, and devotion. He is celebrated for his defeat of the demon king Ravana and his unwavering adherence to truth and duty.
8. Krishna (The Divine Statesman)
Krishna, the eighth avatar, is a central figure in the epic Mahabharata and the Bhagavad Gita. Known for his wisdom, divine play (leelas), and the guidance he provided to Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra, Krishna's teachings encompass love, devotion, and the path of righteousness.
9. Buddha (The Enlightened One)
In some traditions, the ninth avatar of Vishnu is believed to be Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. This avatar represents compassion and the renunciation of violence. The Buddha taught the path to enlightenment through meditation, ethical conduct, and wisdom.
10. Kalki (The Future Warrior)
Kalki is the prophesied tenth avatar, who is yet to appear. He is depicted as a warrior on a white horse, wielding a sword. Kalki is believed to come at the end of the current Kali Yuga (the age of darkness and corruption) to destroy evil and restore dharma, ushering in a new era of righteousness.
