More than any other genre, horror fans appreciate and cherish filthy independent films much more than they do Hollywood products from think tanks. Few horror antagonists are as easily DIY-able as Damien Leone's Art the Clown, the subdued ghoul at the heart of his Terrifier trilogy. It is therefore not surprising that David Howard Thornton was asked back quite quickly to unleash even more violence for the beautifully gory gorefest that is Terrifier 3, following the enormous success of Terrifier 2. Two years ago, Terrifier 2, which was made on a shoestring budget and included some of the most horrific realistic effects ever employed in a motion picture, shattered the mold of independent horror films with its 138-minute running time.
The following expanded rapidly during that period making Art the Clown products and t-shirts nearly as popular as Freddy, Jason, and Chucky, The budget for the most recent sequel also shot through the roof, giving Leon and the studio even more leverage to draw in all-time high attendance. The computations are simple.
Terrifier 3, which switches up the holiday-specific antics from October to Christmas, is unquestionably better than the first two films in terms of production design, changes in setting, and the variety of ways in which victims' bodies are completely disfigured. We have a couple of pinch-me moments to make sure that this isn't all just a glittery fever dream in addition to Chris Jericho's return and actual B-movie appearances.
