World Taekwondo Celebrates International Sport Day

(Apr. 6, 2024) – Today, the global Taekwondo community is observing the UN’s International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP), with World Taekwondo renewing its dedication to leveraging sport to empower communities around the globe.

Through the initiatives of the Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation (THF), World Taekwondo is acknowledged as a leader in assisting refugees globally to enhance their quality of life, cultivate skills, and seize chances to engage in sport.

Five Taekwondo athletes participated in the Refugee Olympic Team at Paris 2024, positioning Taekwondo as the third-most represented sport. At the Paralympic Games in Paris, Para Taekwondo competitor Zakia Khudadadi achieved the first-ever medal for the Refugee Paralympic Team by earning bronze in the Women’s K44 -47kg category.

In November 2023, the THF received the Olympic Cup from the IOC in recognition of its efforts to support refugees worldwide, and later this year, it will host the 3rd Hope and Dreams Sports Festival in partnership with collaborating International Federations, reflecting its mission to empower refugees through sport.

World Taekwondo President and THF Chairman Chungwon Choue shared his thoughts on the organization’s dedication to employing sport as a means of promoting peace.

“As we honor the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, the global Taekwondo community must intensify our efforts in creating more inclusive and healthier societies worldwide through sport,” he stated.

“The THF will persist in playing a crucial role in offering opportunities for refugees to chase their aspirations and utilizing Taekwondo as a mechanism for empowerment.

“We take pride in our accomplishments thus far, and we are resolute in maximizing the capacity of sport as a facilitator for the UN Sustainable Development Goals. ”

The IDSDP has been recognized every year on April 6 since 2014, having been established by the UN General Assembly in 2013. This year’s theme is Levelling the Playing Field: Sport for Social Inclusion, which seeks to confront stereotypes, encourage equal opportunities, and enable inclusive sport for everyone, while emphasizing the role of sport as a cohesive force that promotes inclusion and more just societies.
