Taka Yama – The Falconry Float of Kyoto’s Gion Matsuri

Taka Yama, the 10th float in Kyoto’s Gion Matsuri's Ato Matsuri procession, showcases a rich history dating back to the 15th century. Initially depicting a falconer, a master of hounds, and a servant carrying a cask, the float ceased participation in 1826 due to a destructive rainstorm. After a timber frame fire in 1864, the float was temporarily lost. Remarkably, the sacred statues were rescued and preserved, symbolizing the community's dedication. In 2019, Taka Yama made a triumphant return, featuring Persian knotted carpets and a sacred chest with a Yasaka Shrine deity's name, marking a significant revival in Kyoto's cultural heritage.
