Saica and Mondelez Collaborate to Introduce a Paper-Based Solution for the Food Industry

Saica Group, a leading provider of packaging solutions, has partnered with Mondelez International, a prominent fast-moving consumer goods manufacturer, to launch an innovative paper-based packaging solution for multipack products in the confectionery, biscuit, and chocolate markets. The new packaging is designed to be recyclable within the paper waste stream and is compatible with heat-sealable packing processes. Depending on the desired finish, it can be produced with or without a coating.

During development, the focus was on optimizing the packaging for Vertical Form Fill Seal (VFFS) and conversion processes. Special attention was given to achieving high-quality printing, excellent functionality, and compatibility with machine-packing lines. This ensured the packaging meets the necessary mechanical and sealing performance requirements, guaranteeing that products reach consumers in perfect condition. The packaging aligns with the sustainability standards of the Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI), further emphasizing its commitment to environmental goals.

This initiative forms part of Mondelez International’s broader commitment to sustainable packaging under its “pack light and right” strategy. By 2025, Mondelez aims to reduce virgin plastic in rigid plastic packaging by at least 25%, reduce virgin plastic in all plastic packaging by 5%, and ensure that 98% of its packaging is recyclable. By the end of 2022, the company had already eliminated 72,600 metric tonnes of packaging materials, demonstrating significant progress toward these goals.

Like Mondelez, Saica Group is fully committed to the transition towards a circular economy. To do this, Saica has set a series of ambitious targets in resource efficiency, circularity of materials, climate neutrality, and zero littering, among others. More specifically, the flexible packaging business unit has committed to:

  • Design 100% recyclable flexible packaging portfolio by 2025.
  • Introduce, at least, 5% in weight of post-consumer recycled content in its products by 2025.
  • Reduce 20% in weight of plastic content by 2025.
  • Have 15% in weight of all this packaging made of paper structures by 2025.

“We believe that packaging sustainability is a very serious challenge that required our full commitment and far-reaching collaborations with companies equally committed, like Mondelez,” said Miguel Angel Dora, General Manager at Saica Flex.

“Our ambition to make Saica’s flexible monomaterial structures, including paper, is a key aspect to achieve all these goals. We hope that, by 2025, 100% of our flexible packaging offer is recyclable so that we can contribute towards a truly circular economy,” he added.
