North Hykeham Grandmother Earns Taekwondo Belt at 83

A North Hykeham grandmother has achieved her first graded belt in taekwondo at the age of 83.

Ann Bigger, who began the combat sport in January, obtained her yellow striped belt on Monday after practicing tirelessly.

Mrs. Bigger, from North Hykeham, Lincolnshire, is instructed by her son Mark Bigger, who stated that martial arts are beneficial for physical and mental health at any age.

She mentioned that she had struggled to sleep “because there are many things to learn. It’s hanging this way and feet that way. “

Mr. Bigger, who has been teaching at the North Hykeham Tae Kwon Do Club for 15 years, decided to start an afternoon class for seniors.

Mrs. Bigger expressed that she had not realized what she was getting into when she enrolled but soon began to enjoy it.

Mr. Bigger remarked that his mother had received no special treatment and “needs to improve a bit. “

He mentioned that his mother had been the “ideal student” and had even practiced in the grocery store.

Mr. Bigger stated, “What I initially thought would be a bit of fun turned into three months of training at least twice a week.

“She has genuinely taken it very seriously and has surpassed my expectations all along, while also having a good laugh.

“She has met new friends, she’s developed stronger fitness, she even went to the doctor and was told her blood pressure is reduced, so what a fantastic achievement. I’m really proud of her. “

Mrs. Bigger, who began as a white belt, mentioned that she had been “a bit nervous” about facing her first grading.

She added that she had not anticipated participating in the sport at age 83 but considered herself “fortunate to be able to do it. “
