I once overheard an HR head say, ‘If we tracked people’s washroom breaks, we’d probably hit our efficiency targets.’ He wasn’t joking. Or at least, he didn’t sound like he was.
That’s the paradox of modern workplaces: the tools that make tracking attendance easier can also feel like surveillance if they are pushed too far. It is not the attendance management system itself that creates the tension. It’s the way companies use it.
