- Variations in sample matrix, composition and stability may interfere with a lab's typical performance and procedures, so outlying results do not always signify a competence issue.
- Defining meaningful performance criteria and pass/fail limits can be challenging, as biological variability and analytical variations need to be factored in realistically.
- Significant costs are involved in developing robust proficiency testing programs, producing homogenous samples in sufficient quantities and analyzing large volumes of participant data on an ongoing basis.
- Participation may be difficult to mandate for small, rural labs with limited resources in developing countries. Alternate evaluation approaches need exploration.
