IFZA Panama Free Zone: A New Gateway for UAE–Latin America Trade
In 2025, the International Free Zone Authority (IFZA) is going global. For the first time, IFZA has expanded outside the Middle East with the launch of the IFZA Panama Free Zone right in the heart of the Americas.
This move isn’t just about opening another free zone. It’s about building a real bridge between Dubai and Latin America, giving entrepreneurs and companies on both sides easier access to new markets.
Why Panama?
Panama has always been referred to as the "Hub of the Americas". Here's why:
-
The Panama Canal links the Pacific and Atlantic, and serves as a global trade hub.
-
The economy is based on the U.S. dollar, facilitating international payments to be smooth and stable.
-
Tocumen International Airport connects Panama with big cities in Latin America, the U.S., and Europe.
-
It's a financial center with 60+ international banks having presence there.
IFZA's Vision
-
Martin G. Pedersen, IFZA Chairman, put it nicely:
“Panama’s location, banking system, and business-friendly framework make it an ideal partner for our global journey.”
-
And IFZA’s CEO, Jochen Knecht, made it clear:
“this isn’t just a free zone—it’s a business bridge between Latin America and the UAE.”
Overcoming the Past
Panama wasn't always friendly to investors.Following the 2016 Panama Papers scandal, the nation ended up on the FATF Grey List in 2019. But major reforms made amends tougher banking regulations, improved transparency, and closer compliance.
By late 2023, FATF delisted Panama from its Grey List. In 2024, the EU also did so. That's when international confidence came back—in time for IFZA Panama.
What Businesses Gain
Easy setup for entrepreneurs and SMEs.
-
USD banking—quick, secure, and trusted internationally.
-
Direct access to two continents, minimizing costs and enhancing efficiency.
-
Reduced expenses than maintaining operations in North America.
-
Confidence of investors, supported by Panama's enhanced reputation.
Future Outcomes
IFZA Panama will begin with 1,000 m² of office areas, scaling up to 5,000 m² as the demand increases. IFZA will emphasize industries such as technology, consulting, logistics, finance, and software.
Dubai and Panama are now joined together with IFZA. The Middle East and Latin America are nearer to each other than ever before making global expansion more within reach for businesses large and small.
