How has the power of technology connected the Andaman & Nicobar Islands?
The optical fiber technology, which helps in the transmission of data through optical signals, has connected Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

The only means of connectivity in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands was a satellite link that ensured an internet speed of only 1Gbps. The government took cognizance of the issue and embarked on a project to connect the islands with Chennai with an optical fiber network. NEC India was roped in to lay the optical fiber network.

The work for the CANI submarine OFC network started in 2018 and was not hampered by the pandemic. After the launch of the cables, residents of Andaman & Nicobar Islands have witnessed a vast change in the quality of their lives.

Transmission of data through optical signals has become possible, increasing the internet speed phenomenally to 400 Gbps. With the help of the optical fiber network, the residents can access broadband.

The top IT solutions provider has constructed some of the largest cable networks in service today. Many challenges, like uneven submarine terrain, were overcome to lay the fiber network. It took assistance from local authorities to speed up the cable layout action plan.

Andaman & Nicobar Islands is an archipelago comprised of 572 islands, of which nine are inhabited. The lives of those living on the islands used to be complicated as they were not able to access vital services owing to poor connectivity.

However, hyper-connectivity has enabled the islanders to access services like telemedicine, online education, and payment gateways. Easy transfer of files has reduced the need for the residents to travel long distances.

Broadband has made Wi-Fi a reality in the islands. Hotels can provide guests with better connectivity from the comfort of their rooms. Call drops were frequent before the launch of the CANI cable. However, the OFC has enabled faster processing of signals, which has made it possible for communication service providers to offer better services.
