After an eventful season which saw Tottenham finish eighth in the Premier League and miss out on European competition for only the second time since 2002, fans will be hoping that Ange Postecoglou's arrival can provide much-needed relief.

He arrives to an already overstuffed squad in need of major change and will bring with him an unconventional playing style which could prove unwelcome to many current members of the squad.

What is Ange’s style?

Postecoglou could provide an outlet for Tottenham fans who have endured 14 years of trophyless football, thanks to his teams' reputation of possession-based play and relentless pressing, with an emphasis placed on attacking football.

He creates an artful balance when setting up his sides, employing an inverted 4-3-3 system at Brisbane Roar and Melbourne Victory that featured the wingers sweeping in towards the middle while a false nine dropped back behind them to form triangles between them - similar to Pep Guardiola's formation used with Barcelona, who Postecoglou has spoken highly of. This approach can also be found throughout his managerial career so far.

Postecoglou's inverted fullbacks provide the ideal platform from which to launch counterattacks, with his teams exploiting any spaces between their opponents' fullbacks and centre backs. His attacking full backs are encouraged to attack with pace and directness while frequently linking with more advanced wide players like Jota or Kyogo Furuhashi who can exploit any spaces behind them.

However, this system can be vulnerable to quick and precise passing from opponents in the defensive third, so inverted fullbacks must remain aware of where pressure is coming from and drop back and provide cover accordingly.
