The image of a pilot is one of keen eyesight and sharp hearing. Given this, the idea of a deaf and blind person piloting an aircraft seems a distant, perhaps impossible, dream.

The Challenges

For those without sight, the visual cues that guide every aspect of flight are inaccessible. From runway identification to weather patterns, the world above is a realm of darkness. For those without hearing, the auditory cues that alert pilots to engine problems, air traffic control communications, and environmental hazards are silent. Together, these sensory impairments present a formidable barrier to flight.
