Cement production is one of the major sources of greenhouse gas emissions in the world, accounting for about 8% of global CO2 emissions. The main reason for this is the calcination of limestone, which releases CO2 during the production of Portland cement clinker. Geopolymer is a promising alternative to Portland cement that can significantly reduce CO2 emissions from cement production.

Geopolymer is a type of inorganic polymer that is formed by activating aluminosilicate materials such as fly ash, slag, metakaolin, and rice husk ash with alkaline solutions. Geopolymer does not require calcination or high-temperature kilns, and it can utilize industrial wastes as raw materials. Geopolymer also has superior properties to Portland cement, such as higher strength, durability, fire resistance, and acid resistance. Therefore, geopolymer is a potential solution for low-carbon cement production that can mitigate climate change and environmental degradation.
