What is Silica Sand?
Silicon dioxide, also known as silica, makes up over 90% of silica sand. The remaining 10% is made up of other such minerals as feldspar and opaque minerals like zircon and rutile. Silica sand deposits are most commonly formed through the weathering and erosion of sandy soils, siliceous bedrock units and igneous quartz formations over long periods of time.

- Glassmaking: Glass requires silica as its major ingredient. High purity silica sand is ideal for manufacturing glass jars, bottles, light bulbs, windows, and more glass products.

- Water Filtration: Filter sand, or filtration sand, is specially processed silica sand used in water treatments systems to filter out pollutants and aquatic organisms from water supplies.

- Abrasives: Products like sandpaper, sandblasting sand, and steel shot rely on washed quartz sand and other specialized silica abrasives which can smooth, scour and finish a variety of surfaces without harming the material.

While hydraulic fracturing dominates silica sand demand currently, growth is expected across other sectors as well. Asia Pacific represents the largest and fastest growing regional market for silica sand, led by China, with major deposits and applications in construction, glass, and foundry industries throughout the region. The United States, Canada, Brazil and Saudi Arabia have some of the world's largest known deposits of high purity silica suitable for industrial applications. As long as silica sand resources are available and responsibly managed, washed quartz sand will remain an important industrial mineral processed and shipped worldwide.

The high demand for washed silica sand is largely driven by strong industrial construction and manufacturing sectors globally. Key end use markets like oil and gas extraction, concrete, glass and metal casting industries require huge volumes of high purity silica sand to produce their respective materials and products that are crucial for modern infrastructure and technology.
