India-the largest rice exporter, which shipped a record 22.2 million tons of rice in 2022, or more than 40% of the total 55.4 million tons of rice exported worldwide banned the exports of non-basmati white rice on 20th of July 2023.

The DGFT’s notification to stop further exports of non-basmati white rice due to crop damage and production fears caused by delayed monsoon rains weighed heavily in the global rice market. In the previous year, the country imposed restrictions on broken rice exports but there have been no limitations on exports of basmati and parboiled rice from India.

Thailand’s Rice Exports

Thailand is gaining from India's ban on rice exports and has no reason to stop the flow of the grain itself, according to the country's commerce minister on Monday.

Minister Jurin Laksanawisit stated at a press conference that the Government would ensure sufficient rice production for both domestic consumption and exports, as well as making sure domestic prices are not too much.

He added that monthly exports ranged from 700,000 to 800,000 metric tons and that Thailand shipped 4.8 million metric tons in the first seven months.

According to Charoen Laothamatas, the President of the Thai Rice Exporters Association, Thailand, the world's second-largest rice exporter falling behind India, is anticipated to export more than 8 million metric tons of rice this year, up from 7.71 million metric tonnes in the previous year.

Following India's surprise ban on the export of non-basmati white rice, two trade sources reported last week that some rice exporters in Thailand and

Vietnam were renegotiating prices on sales contracts for about 500,000 metric tons of rice for shipment in August.
