On curing, epoxy forms a hard and glossy finish with good adhesion to various road surfaces. Epoxy coatings can withstand light to medium traffic for 1-2 years before requiring re-painting. They are transparent allowing underlying road surface repairs if needed.

Being soluble in many organic solvents, epoxy resins offer flexibility in formulation. However, their dry film is less flexible compared to advanced options. Moisture penetration over time can also cause loss of adhesion.

Selecting the Right Paint formulation

The type of road marking paint selected depends on factors like traffic volumes, road category, environmental conditions, budget and expediency of work.

For heavily trafficked freeways, expressways and national highways—thermoplastic or polyurea road marking paints are highly recommended. They ensure visibility and safety even in extreme weather conditions for many years with minimal maintenance.

Epoxy road marking paints are suitable for low to medium volume city, town and village roads where durability is not the prime concern. They provide a cost-effective solution that lasts for 1-2 refresh cycles.

In situations where roads need to be reopened quickly, fast-curing polyurea is preferred over other options requiring longer downtimes. Expert guidance must be sought based on project needs when deciding between various advanced paint technologies.

Promoting Safety through Retroreflectivity

Retroreflection is a crucial property ensured by adding glass beads to road marking paints. It helps markings appear brighter when viewed from an angle such as from a vehicle’s headlights. With aging, retroreflectivity reduces making lines difficult to see, especially at night.

Studies show a close relationship between retroreflectivity of road markings and nighttime crash rates. To promote safety, many countries have set minimum retroreflectivity standards that must be met by in-service roadway markings. Government agencies periodically conduct surveys to monitor retroreflectivity levels and prioritize refreshing of faded markings.
